The flavour of Fuerteventura

The Canary Island of Fuerteventura tastes of sea, salt and goat grazing. Discover the best example of its cuisine, its internationally known majorero cheese with registered designation of origin and many times awarded as one of the best goat cheese in our planet.

Majorero cheese

Majorero cheese (majorero stems from Maxorata, name that the island of Fuerteventura received in ancient times) is a delight that comes from traditional grazing of majorera goats, with Registered Designation of Origin seal since 1999. It was the first cheese from The Canary Islands to receive such seal and the first goat cheese in Spain.

Characteristics

It is made with goat milk following the more traditional method; it is cylindrical in shape, weighing 1-6 kilos. Its creamy texture and its acidulous, slightly spicy flavour surprise the most demanding palates, as it keeps the undisputed taste of its cheese-making tradition.

Types

According to the ripening process three types of majorero cheese can be found: mild, semi-cured and cured. Moreover, the cheese can be smeared in different ways: with oil, paprika or gofio, giving way to all the varieties that the designation of origin allows, all of them being true delights.

The majorera goat

The majorera goat is a unique breed with its own characteristics. It is a rustic wild and very strong species that produces a dense and fat milk. The majorera goat is recognized as one of the most productive in the world. All throughout the entire island you can see the goats that are responsible, along with the tradition of the master cheese makers, for the majorero cheese excellence.

Dozens of farms and cheese factories spread across the island ensure that the flagship product of the gastronomy of Fuerteventura is never missing on the table.

The cheese in gastronomy

Visiting Fuerteventura and not trying their exceptional cheese is almost impossible, as it is everywhere and a very important part of the primary sector is working on its production. In all supermarkets, restaurants and homes majorero cheese takes up a special place and the typical cuisine of the island cannot be understood without the taste of their cheese.

Today, not only the traditional cuisine keeps using the cheese; the most modern cuisine in the island has incorporated it as one of the star ingredients in its recipes, making them unique in the world.

Be captivated by the traditional flavour of unique goats in the world, the flavour of Fuerteventura.
